MX471C – A Flexible Automotive DAQ Solution

MX471C is a controller area network bus (CAN bus) module that brings high‑throughput vehicle and automation system data into the QuantumX family. With four individually configurable, electrically isolated interfaces, it captures time-stamped CAN bus traffic and keeps it synchronous with analog sensor measurements – ideal for mobile testing, bench automation and fleet monitoring.

Key features

  • Four isolated CAN/CAN FD channels with configurable bit rates and switchable termination
  • Broad protocol support: CAN 2.0 A/B, CAN FD (flexible data rate), SAE J1939, ISOBUS, CANopen, CAN Calibration Protocol (CCP), and Universal Measurement and Calibration Protocol on CAN (XCP-on-CAN)
  • Real-time decoding of up to 128 signals, or raw logging for later decoding
  • Decode CCP, XCP-on-CAN signals (requires CANape®)
  • High data transfer rates up to 4 Mbit/s in CAN FD mode
  • Gateway modes:
    • Transmit analog inputs to CAN messages, up to 200 analog signals to CAN FD
    • Stream to Ethernet from all connected MX modules to the PC via dual Ethernet (100/1000) with Precision Time Protocol version 2 (PTPv2) support
  • Socket: D-Sub 9-pin (male)
  • Voltage supply: 10 to 30 V DC, max. 6 W

High CAN connectivity with high data throughput

MX471C lets you acquire bus signals alongside strain, force, pressure, temperature, and other analog measurements from QuantumX modules. You can record full raw bus streams for maximum flexibility, or decode key signals on-board to reduce bandwidth and enable fast actions. The module’s powerful CAN gateway mode allows you to encode and transmit up to 200 analog inputs signals in real time to a test bench, mobile recorder or automation system with the lowest latencies (<1 ms). In CAN FD mode, the data transfer rate is up to 4 Mbit/s.

MX471C also operates as Ethernet gateway. So any signal from directly connected MX modules can be transferred to Ethernet and to a PC or recorder.

Typical applications

  • Vehicle testing with multiple bus systems (powertrain, chassis, body)
  • CAN FD data recording for proving grounds and on-road validation
  • Test bench automation where analog sensor data must be shared on CAN
  • Fleet monitoring and troubleshooting with synchronized sensor and bus data
  • Research and development setups needing protocol flexibility

Easy and flexible system integration

As part of a scalable QuantumX data acquisition architecture, MX471C connects to other modules for fully synchronized, multi-domain test situations. You can combine MX471C with analog measurement modules and a data recorder, or decode in real-time and transfer to analog voltage output via the MX878B module or to an Ethernet based fieldbus via the CX27C module for bench integration.

Ethernet gateway capability streams signals to a personal computer (PC) or recorder, while the CAN gateway helps integrate new sensors into existing control networks without redesign. PTPv2 time synchronization supports consistent timestamps across distributed systems and simplifies correlation between bus events and physical measurements.

Stay connected with the latest firmware and software

All QuantumX modules are delivered with the latest firmware. For existing modules, it is easy to update the firmware by simply downloading the latest firmware package.

HBK also provides both native and third-party software packages and drivers allowing you to fully leverage the QuantumX ‘open’ data acquisition infrastructure for integration with a great number of operating, analysis and automation software. This includes:

  • MX Assistant: a modern and free device or system assistant that supports all module functions
  • catman®Easy / AP / Enterprise: The standard DAQ software used with the QuantumX platform
  • Third-party drivers: For example, LabVIEW™, Visual Studio® .NET and CANape
