Understanding the Contents of the Relevant Standards for Electrical Power Calculation

This white paper is intended to explain the contents of the relevant standards for electrical power calculation. First, typical requirements for a universal power theory are derived. Based on these criteria, the so-called FBD power analysis, which serves as the basis for the DIN 40110 standard, is explained in detail as a reference. In this context, typical terms such as instantaneous, active, reactive, non-active and apparent power are defined, explained and visualized using selected examples. In the final section, the similarities and differences between the standards IEEE 1459-2010 Std and DIN 40110-2 are presented.

Key Takeaways:

  • Electrical power theory
  • Standards for electrical power calculation
  • Instantaneous, active, reactive, non-active and apparent power
  • DIN 40110 and IEEE 1459-2010 Std
