Measurement Description

Type 4946 provides a standardized 2 cc acoustic coupler volume for measuring hearing-aid frequency response, sensitivity and distortion.

The coupler accommodates a wide range of hearing aid styles through interchangeable click-on ear-mould simulators, ensuring correct and repeatable positioning during testing.

The self-centering microphone design and controlled acoustic volume help maintain measurement consistency, while the protected microphone arrangement minimizes handling risks during frequent device changes.

These capabilities make the coupler suitable for research, development, verification and high-throughput production testing.

Typical Applications

  • Frequency response measurements of hearing aids
  • Sensitivity testing and performance verification
  • Distortion measurements
  • Production-line quality control and quality assurance testing
  • Hearing aid servicing and maintenance
  • Research and development of hearing aid technologies
  • Comparative testing of behind-the-ear and in-the-ear hearing aid designs

System Integration

Type 4946 integrates seamlessly with existing HBK hearing-aid measurement systems and supports a broad range of pressure-field microphones and preamplifiers.

Compatible microphones include 1-inch Pressure-field Microphone Type 4144, ½-inch Pressure-field Microphone Type 4192 and ½-inch Prepolarized Pressure-field Microphone Type 4947.

The coupler can be used with conventional and Constant Current Line Drive (CCLD) preamplifiers and is compatible with LAN-XI, PULSE™ Multi-analyzer and Audio Analyzer platforms.

Designed to fit the HBK Anechoic Test Box Type 4232, it enables efficient implementation in both laboratory and production test setups.

Terminology Explained

Artificial Ear: a standardized acoustic device used to simulate the acoustic conditions experienced by hearing aids or earphones, enabling repeatable and comparable measurements.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aid: a hearing aid worn behind the ear that delivers sound through tubing to an ear mould placed in the ear canal.

In-the-Ear (ITE) Hearing Aid: a hearing aid designed to fit partially or completely within the outer ear.

Pressure-field Microphone: a precision measurement microphone designed to accurately measure sound pressure in enclosed or controlled acoustic environments.

CCLD (Constant Current Line Drive): a microphone powering and signal transmission technique that uses a constant-current supply, simplifying connection and conditioning of measurement microphones.

Anechoic Test Box: a controlled acoustic enclosure used to isolate devices from external noise and reflections during electroacoustic measurements.
