Take-back concept for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

EU Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and the EU Council on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (known as the WEEE Directive) came into force across EU Member States on 13th August 2005. The WEEE Directive was further updated by EU Directive 2012/19/EU on WEEE (known as the WEEE ‘Recast’ Directive) which later came into force on 24th July 2012.

The purpose of the WEEE Directive is to minimise the impact of uncontrolled disposal of electrical and electronic equipment when it reaches end-of-life by requiring producers such as HBK to provide arrangements for collection, treatment, recycling and other forms of recovery of the products they sell in Europe when they become waste.

The WEEE Directive is implemented into national legislation by each respective EU Member State.

For example, in Germany, the WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU on waste electrical and electronic equipment has been implemented in the Act on the Placing on the Market, the Take-Back and the Environmentally Compatible Disposal of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (ElektroG). Manufacturers, distributors and importers who place electrical and electronic equipment on the market in Germany undertake to register with the Stiftung elektro-altgeräte register (Stiftung ear). In Germany, Hottinger Brüel & Kjaer GmbH is registered under the WEEE Reg No: DE 66485129.

HBK labels all relevant products with the crossed-out waste bin in accordance with Annex III of WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU. Waste from electrical and electronic equipment with the appropriate labelling must be disposed of separately from household waste.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) that is used exclusively in households other than private households or in any case is not usually used in private households (so-called B2B devices) may not be disposed of via the municipal collection and take-back points.

Hottinger Brüel & Kjaer GmbH offers business customers in EU Member States the opportunity to return their old B2B electrical and electronic equipment purchased from Hottinger Brüel & Kjaer GmbH in order to ensure recycling and environmentally sound disposal. The European Advanced Recycling Network (EARN) is a partner of Hottinger Brüel & Kjaer for the pan-European take-back solution for business-to-business B2B devices from Hottinger Brüel & Kjaer. To arrange the return and collection of an old B2B device, please use the link below:

Important note
– For business customers in Luxembourg, please contact EARN directly where you can organise WEEE collection and treatment separately. Under such arrangements in Luxembourg, HBK will also pay for the costs of shipment from the business end-user’s address to the EARN treatment facility.

Information for WEEE recycling facilities on treatment of components and substances

As part of complying with the requirements of Article 15 of the WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU, HBK makes readily available information on recycling of HBK products to treatment facilities. This applies to all types of new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market in Europe after August 13th 2005.

Please click on the e-mail link below and provide the following details for the product for which you would like to receive recycling information:

  • Model number of HBK product
  • Your company name
  • Contact name
  • Address
  • Telephone number
  • E-mail address

We will dispatch the information to you shortly.
