Inertial Measurement Units (IMU)

An inertial measurement unit (IMU) is a device that integrates multi-axes, accelerometers, gyroscopes, and other sensors to provide estimation of an objects orientation in space. Measurements of acceleration, angular rate, and attitude are typical data outputs. MicroStrain’s IMU inertial sensors are commonly used in robot dynamic motion and terrain compensation, payload platform stabilization, and antenna and camera pointing applications.

IMU Sensors in Different Performance Levels and Packaging

Our Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) include direct measurement of acceleration and angular rate, are fully temperature-compensated and calibrated over the operating temperature and use MEMS gyro and accelerometer technology to create highly accurate, small, lightweight devices. Available options for different performance levels and packaging enable you to select the right sensor for a wide range of applications, including construction and Agricultural vehicles, UGVs and robotics.

Applications

Robotics

Because they can be programmed to perform dangerous, dirty and/or repetitive tasks with consistent precision and accuracy, industrial robots are increasingly used in a variety of industries and applications. Using Microstrain IMU within an industrial robot, allows for real time stability and terrain compensation.

 

Unmanned Vehicles

Navigation subsystems are integral to the performance of unmanned ground vehicles. Conventional, high-performance navigation systems support unmanned solutions but are limited in their application due to their size, weight, power consumption, and cost concerns.
